Better Day in the Vase

By Admin ccl

17 out of 30 go through

Although it was not complete plain sailing, CCL clubs in general did far better over the weekend in the FA Vase than they had in the FA Cup. Of the 30 CCL clubs who were in action, 17 came through their ties, to take their place in the next round.

The day’s leading scorers were Chessington & Hook United who knocked seven past Sussex side Oakwood without reply. Hanworth Villa scored five against UCL club Bedford and CB Hounslow made the longish journey to Rothwell Corinthians worth it, hitting five without reply. Spelthorne also went nap but needed extra time to see off the quaintly named Northampton ON Cheneks by five goals to three. Southall did the League proud also against Hellenic side Reading City winning narrowly by 3 goals to 2.

Five clubs from Division One won their matches, with arguably Sheerwater’s result on Sunday against Lancing albeit only by 2 goals to 1being one of the most impressive, especially in their first ever season in the Vase.

The next round is just two weeks away when there will be 20 ties involving one or in some cases, two CCL clubs. Poor old Abbey, having travelled down to Gloucester to beat Lydney Town, now have to make a similar journey in the next round, this time to Chipping Sodbury who play in the Western League, the two grounds being some 94 miles apart.

There were only a smattering of league matches on Saturday, with results remaining very unpredictable. Sutton Common Rovers lost 0-2 at Camberley, who have struggled for points whilst Walton & Hersham, of whom the same can be said drew at Banstead, the latter thus preserving their unbeaten league record this season.

There was just the one match in Division One, which saw high flyers Dorking Wanderers Reserves and Farnham Town grind out a nil-nil result.

There are not too many midweek games this week but three of our clubs are involved in FA Cup replays on Tuesday evening, with Raynes Park Vale off to Spelthorne Sports, and Hanworth Villa at home to AFC Croydon Athletic.

For anyone wishing to attend the midweek match between AC London and Epsom & Ewell, it is taking place on Wednesday evening at Whyteleafe FC and not on Tuesday as first scheduled.
