A Look at the S. Comb Cup

By Admin ccl

Eversley and SCR score ten each

With no Premier Division games this midweek, clubs were largely pre-occupied with the Southern Combination Challenge Cup. Although something of a supplementary competition, it is a 1st Team competition on paper and has been going since 1958.

These days most of the entries come from CCL clubs although there are always a few from both higher and lower levels. This season, no doubt due to the reduced number of league matches, there was a significantly increased number of entries, with no less than 27 clubs applying, which may well be a record.

Many of the 1st Round ties have taken place this week, with two clubs securing double figure results, namely Sutton Common Rovers who, on Monday evening, knocked in ten without reply against a Staines Town X1, and Eversley & California on Tuesday who posted a similar result against Staines Lammas, last year’s winners, so it was not a good week for the town of Staines! There was some initial confusion over the result as it looked at first as if it had been Lammas who scored the ten goals bu tit was quickly sorted out.

Of the seven ties that were played on Tuesday evening, four of them went to penalties, with possibly the most credit going to Frimley Green who beat Premier side Raynes Park Vale 4-1 on pens after a one-one draw. There is no longer any extra time in this competition, which may explain the number of draws after 90 minutes.

Chessington & Hook put up a spirited performance atAshford Town, losing 1-2, but Godalming succumbed to a home 0-6 defeat at the hands of Molesey, themselves enduring a miserable season so far.

There was also one 2nd Round match, played at Bedfont Sports between Lyne from the Surrey Intermediate League and a Hanworth Villa side which the Villians eventually won 2-0.

There were also two league matches on Tuesday, both in Division One. One saw Sheerwater pursuing their promotion aspirations with a 3-0 home win over AC London who had been in very good form themselves whilst the other saw Kensington Borough achieve a very welcome three points in a narrow win against British Airways by three goals to two.

We now look forward to Saturday when there is a full league programme of matches before the excitement of the 1st Round of the FA Vase the following weekend. All the fixtures are on the fixtures page, including those Vase matches now being played either on the Friday evening or on Sunday.
