Abbey go out of Vase: 10 league matches postponed

Sadly, it was the end of the road for Abbey Rangers this year in the Buildbase FA Vase, as they lost 1-3 away to a strong Cray Valley (PM) in the 5th Round of the competition on Saturday. Abbey put up a great fight, even taking an early lead but it was not to be in the end. Nevertheless, the club has done the League proud and at the very least should have secured a deserved exemption to the 2nd Round of the competition next season.

Our other survivors, Chertsey Town had the frustration of their match at Irlam in Manchester being called off and the two clubs will try again this coming Saturday. It means of course that they now know who they might be playing in the 6th Round (last eight) and it would be an even longer trip (and great day out!) with a trip to either Hebburn Town or West Auckland Town, both in the North-East and both members of the traditionally strong Northern League. The little task of taking on Irlam comes first though.

In the League on Saturday, we saw our first significant batch of postponements with no fewer than 10 league fixtures postponed throughout the two divisions. Of the matches that were played, there was a major shock in the Premier Division with Spelthorne Sports travelling to league leaders Sutton Common Rovers and coming away with all three points in a 4-1 victory. Apparently Sports had to defend with their lives as the match went on but held out for a famous victory.

In the other two Premier games, Cobham defeated Redhill 3-2 thanks to an injury time goal whilst Walton & Hersham seem to be sinking towards relegation as they lost 0-3 at home to Horley now back under the management of Antony Jupp.

Only one match was played in Division One and that was on the 3G at Bedfont Sports where Godalming Town avenged a recent cup defeat by inflicting a 3-2 defeat upon Deportivo Galicia, again thanks to a last gasp goal.

The weather, although eased, is still causing some problems with matches off at Banstead and Spelthorne Sports in the Premier Division and at Tooting Bec (at Raynes Park Vale FC) tonight (Tuesday). All the others are on as far as we know but it would still be best to check before travelling.
