Buildbase FA Vase FINAL: Chertsey Town 3 Cray Valley (PM) 1 aet

Chertsey completed a spellbinding season this afternoon at Wembley by overcoming a resolute Cray Valley side by 3 goals to 1 after extra time to win the 2019 Buildbase FA Vase.

It was a nervy start by both sides but they both settled down quickly and goals were always on the cards with both sets of forwards looking dangerous throughout. There was little to choose between the teams but it was Cray who took the lead when they broke down the left but it took the Curfews just a few minutes to equalise and that scoreline was probably right at the break.

Play slowed down a bit at times in the second half and right at the death both sides had great chances to put the match to bed, Cray indeed hitting the woodwork.

Extra time it was though and Chertsey were now looking the stronger although there was always a threat from their opponents. The crucial goal came from the penalty spot though when a clear trip just inside the area saw Jake Baxter making no mistake from the spot, to give the Curfews the advantage.

They now just had to hold on but the goal had breathed new life into the side and it was man of the match Quincy Rowe who made it safe with a beauty of a shot into the far corner giving the keeper no chance.

It was a new experience for the CCL for one of their clubs to win the Vase and it was well deserved after a number of tough games against some redoubtable opponents. A special mention for John Pomroy, (pictured) loyal to the club over many seasons, who came on to good effect in the final minutes, and of course Chertsey Secretary, Chris Gay, who has been at the club since it was founded (almost). Dave Anderson proved again what a good manager he is and congratulations go to every single player for their efforts over the season that have brought such success.
