Cup Success

SCR, Worcester Park and Banstead Athletic all reach finals.

It has been a highly successful week for CCL clubs in various cup competitions.

On Monday evening, Sutton Common Rovers reached the Final of the Southern Combination Cup, a competition that has been going strong since 1958. These days it tends to be dominated by CCL clubs with the odd Isthmian and Southern League sides. Clubs from Step 7 have also competed. Sutton Common Rovers defeated Walton Casuals by 2 goal to 1, after extra time and will now face one of Bedfont and Feltham, Molesey or Camberley in the Final on a date to be decided.

The Surrey Premier Cup Final will be an all-CCL affair this season, with both Worcester Park and Banstead Athletic winning hard fought semi-finals against Corinthian-Casuals Reserves and Metropolitan Police Reserves respectively. The Final will take place on Friday 28 April at a venue to be advised.

In addition there were two very gallant defeats by our clubs against higher league opposition in various semi-finals. Firstly CB Hounslow United took Wealdstone all the way on Tuesday evening in the Middlesex Charity Cup, drawing four apiece with the Stones only to lose 4-5 on penalties. Apparently CB played so well that they were applauded from the field at the end.

Secondly, and we don’t know much about the match at this early stage but Guildford City’s bid to reach the Final of the Surrey Senior Cup just failed on Wednesday evening when they were beaten just
1-2 by Woking FC
