Knaphill win Cherry Red Records Premier Cup

Knaphill FC are the new holders of the Cherry Red Records Premier Challenge Cup, winning it for the first time ever last Saturday (12 May) at the home of Bedfont Sports FC, with a close and exciting 3-2 win after extra time over Worcester Park FC. in front of 403 people, despite the rain that fell throughout.

The match was relatively even throughout, with Worcester Park possibly having more of it overall but it was the Premier Division side who found the net taking the lead through Jimmy Norman and that was how it remained until half-time.

Within seconds of the resumption though, Joe Cheeseman equalised and for a long time Worcester Park looked as if they might go on to win it. Knaphil though defended well when they had to and it the Premier side showed their striking know how as they re-took the lead through sub Asterick Samuels.

Not to be deterred, another equaliser, this time from Worcester Park’s Simon Burt, sent the game into extra-time and this time there was no escaping as George Frith notched the winner for the Knappers.

It was a well contested and enjoyable final with both clubs giving their all. It was well refereed by Luke Nicholson and his colleagues and superbly hosted by Bedfont. Some excellent photos were taken by Andy Nunn, including the one shown.

As we go into the last few matches, there are two more finals this week. This evening, Tuesday 15 May, Eversley & California will contest the Aldershot Senior Cup Final against Hartley Wintney at Aldershot Town FC, kick-off 7.45 p.m. at the Recreation Ground. Eversley actually lost in the semi-final to the British Army but for some reason they are unavailable for the Final so Eversley have been reinstated.

On Thursday, two CCL clubs will contest the Southern Combination Challenge Cup Final. The match will again be at Bedfont Sports with Division One Staines Lammas hosting Premier side CB Hounslow United. Kick-off is 7.45 p.m.

The final senior league match of the season is also on Wednesday when Worcester Park make the short trip to Farleigh Rovers (kick-off 7.00 p.m.)

Normally by now we would be able to say who’s going up from Division One and who’s being relegated from the Premier Division but in this year of re-structure we have to wait for the FA to make their decisions which the writer understands will not be received until at least 23 May
