Guildford City Appoint New Manager

From Guildford City Secretary, Barry Underwood

Guildford City Football Club is pleased to announce the appointment of Dean Thomas to the vacant post of first team manager. Not to be confused with Guildford’s former manager of the same name, Dean is the current manager of Godalming & Farncombe Athletic who are currently sitting in third position in the Surrey Elite League. The model that Guildford City is attempting to build is that of a local club at the heart of its community. The appointment of a young and ambitious manager, working with a core of locally based players very much fits this bill.

Dean, aged 31, formerly played for Aldershot Town Youth and then for Godalming & Farncombe in the Surrey Intermediate League. Unfortunately Dean’s playing career was cut short by injury and it was a natural decision to move into management. After one year assisting Paul Bonner at Ash United and one year at Merrow FC, Dean moved into management at Godalming & Farncombe, where over the last three seasons he has managed the club to their highest ever league position, winning their first trophy, and in doing so playing some good football.

Dean, who lives in Burpham, has a good knowledge of local football, and has many contacts within the game, and he is hugely looking forward to the challenge of managing his local club in the Combined Counties League.

It has been agreed that Dean will manage Godalming & Farncombe for one last time on Saturday, and will officially take over the reins at Guildford City on Monday 28 September. "
