Managerial Change at Spelthorne

Paul Johnson Departs.

News has come that Spelthorne Sports Manager Paul Johnson, along with coach Gary Ross, has resigned. Paul has certainly been one of the most successful managers in the CCL in recent times, with Spelthorne going virtually unbeaten in the season they won promotion to the Premier Division and then finishing a very creditable 6th in their first season at the enhanced level.

Progress has stalled this season though with Spelthorne losing six of their seven opening league games and being dumped out of both the FA Cup and FA Vase at the first hurdle. Last week’s 2-6 defeat at the hands of Epsom & Ewell was obviously the last straw.

Spelthorne have moved quickly to fill the vacant position with long time club man and previous manager Steve Flatman stepping into the hot seat. He will need no introduction to the Spelthorne faithful having held the reins before Johnson’s arrival and laying the foundations for the more recent successes. He will be assisted by former Ashford Town stalwart Paul Burgess, who as well as holding the record for the most appearances for the club, also won numerous trophies as Ashford manager.

The first match for the incoming duo is tomorrow away at local rivals Chertsey Town
