Not so good in the FA Cup

By Admin ccl

Division One sides did well though

It was largely a disappointing day for many CCL clubs in the FA Cup on Saturday, with 14 exiting the competition at the first hurdle.

We will therefore dwell upon those sides who did well, especially Frimley Green and Epsom & Ewell who both achieved away wins over clubs who play at one level above them in Step 5. Frimley enjoyed a late win away at Wessex League side Fareham Town, whilst Epsom travelled down to Sussex to beat Langney Wanderers from the Southern Combination 2-1.

In the two all-CCL matches, Horley came out on top 3-1 down the road at Redhill whilst SCR would probably have expected better than to lose at home to CB Hounslow, 0-2, the latter having achieved an impressive 4-1 win in the League over Walton & Hersham in midweek.

Balham who have been on a long successful run stretching back to last season were another side to win, triumphing 2-0, at East Preston, whilst Spelthorne Sports emphatically saw off Peacehaven & Telscombe 3-0. Raynes Park Vale also saw off Sussex opposition, even though they are a Surrey club if that makes sense, in the shape of Lingfield by three goals to nil.

Three clubs lived to fight another day and Hanworth Villa will look to go one better when Crowborough visit the Ranch on Tuesday evening, as indeed will Colliers Wood who fought out a local draw away at Beckenham Town on Saturday. Sandhurst’s prospects look a little tougher as they trek down to Lymington Town on Tuesday evening.

All in all, it means that we will have at least eight and possibly ten clubs in the next round on Saturday 25 August. There is one definite all CCL tie between Raynes Park Vale and Spelthorne and there could be two more should Sandhurst and Colliers Wood win their respective replays.

In Division One, the day’s honours should perhaps go to Bagshot who pulled off a 2-1 win at newcomers British Airways which must have been a mighty relief after conceding eleven in their opening match against Bedfont & Feltham. The early leaders though are Eversley & California who have maximum points from their opening two matches following a 2-0 success over AC London.

As well as the cup replays, there are 6 matches in the Premier Division in midweek, five on Tuesday whilst Balham entertain Raynes Park Vale on Wednesday evening. All the fixtures can be viewed on the fixtures page of the web site.
