Sheerwater are Div One Champions

Frimley's defeat lets in the Sheers!

Last night, Frimley Green had to win their away match against Tooting Bec to take the championship of Division One. Any other result would see Sheerwater taking the title.

A record attendance of 165 crammed in at Raynes Park Vale, where Tooting Bec play and they were treated to a match of high endeavour on a pitch that clearly favoured long-ball tactics.

It was all fairly even but just as the visitors seemed to be getting on top, the Bec went ahead with a sharp finish from Alex Wilshere, leaving Frimley with a more difficult task.

In the end they couldn't quite make it. There were several near misses but Tooting defended confidently, especially their two giant central defenders and could even have increased their lead, especially given the gaps that were appearing with Frimley having no option other than to push up.

The match ended with no more goals which meant that Sheerwater had won Division One by the narrow margin of one point. Many of their players were present and if they stick together they will surely make an impression upon the Premier Division next season.

Frimley, who still have the League Cup (Esoteric Recordings) Final against Epsom & Ewell to look forward to, were the unlucky losers and with their "points per game" total not looking good enough for promotion, (despite only four league defeats all season) in comparison with other 2nd placed Step 6 clubs throughout the country, they will have to contemplate another season in Division One, unlss something happens elsewhere. You never know!

It has been very competitive in Division One this season with five clubs all in with a shout until three or four weeks ago. In the end it came down to just Sheerwater and Frimley and both clubs can take great pride in taking the matter to the wire
