An Interesting Start to the Season

The opening days’ matches brought some interesting results, one or two of which could be described as unexpected, based on last season’s form at any rate.

The least expected result arguably would have been SCR’s home defeat at the hands of Badshot Lea by 4 goals to 1, the Baggies being four up at half-time. Banstead were fairly strong last season but succumbed heavily at home to Abbey Rangers losing 0-5, a result that sent Abbey to the top of the fledgling table on goal difference.

Of the new boys in the division, Sheerwater took all three points in their home clash with Guildford City, in a match that had all the excitement near the end with the visitors equalising on 87 minutes and then seeing a penalty saved which otherwise may well have given them all three points. Instead Sheerwater went to the other end and, deep in stoppage time, scored a winner of their own.

Fellow promoted team Frimley Green did not do as well losing 1-3 at home to CB Hounslow but Ascot United, having transferred from the Hellenic League made their presence felt with a solid 2-0 win at Cobham.

There was another late turnaround at Camberley where two goals from Balham, one on 77 minutes and then another in the 6th minute of stoppage time enabled them to firstly equalise and then take all three points.

Of the two clubs relegated to us, Molesey secured a 2-1 home win over Redhill, the latter ending the match with just nine men, but Egham succumbed to Colliers Wood 1-2 after taking the lead in the first half. It was a hard fought win for Colliers though with Mario Embalo becoming one of three CCL players (that we know of) to find himself in the sin bin, leaving his side with nine men for a while when another player suffered a red card around the same time.

In Division One, many eyes were on the Bulls of Jersey and they got off to a good start beating visitors Ash United by three goals to nil in the end in front of a crowd that almost topped the 1000 mark. All seems to have gone well though with much praise coming through for the Islanders’ hospitality.

Another eye catching result was newly promoted Westside handing out a 6-0 beating to FC Deportivo, who had gone down to 10 men after just 20 minutes. Also possibly unexpected was the result at Epsom & Ewell, with visitors Fleet Spurs, fielding a much changed team, scoring five goals against the home side’s three.

In one of the division’s only two drawn games, Cove and AFC Hayes fought out what sounds an exciting 3-3 draw whilst Walton & Hersham started the fight back to higher levels with a 3-0 home win over Eversley & California.

As anticipated, the day’s highest attendance was in Jersey where the attendance was nudging four figures at 927 but both Sheerwater and Bedfont & Feltham, neither particularly associated with big crowds, both returned three figure attendances. Altogether 2066 people watched a CCL match on Saturday and were rewarded with a total of 80 goals over the two divisions
